This series explores the sculptural forms and uncanny presence of Mojave yucca plants (Yucca schidigera), transformed into black-and-white photographs that transcend their identity as flora. The images evoke elders, shamans, kings, migrants, warriors, and seekers—symbolizing the many people who have lived in or passed through the Mojave over centuries.These yuccas appear as quiet witnesses to time, embodying resilience in a landscape increasingly shaped by climate change. The Mojave Desert’s environmental fragility underpins the work. By 2021, the region faced the worst mega-drought in over 1,200 years. Brief rains in 2023 brought a surge of vegetation, which fueled the catastrophic York Fire—scorching 93,000 acres and decimating Joshua tree forests. The work honors this balance between survival and loss, offering a poetic yet anxious reflection on the desert’s enduring spirit. Yucca People of the Mojave invites reflection on memory, resilience, and the silent endurance of forms shaped by time and climate.
