LAS REINAS DE LA SELVA
QUEENS OF THE JUNGLE
(2014)
Las Reinas de la Selva offers a vision of figures rising from the jungle—bodies adorned in local flora, bold in their presence and rooted in place. Photographed in dense natural settings in central Colombia, the series features drag queens and gender-fluid individuals in staged performances that blur the line between visibility and camouflage. These portraits merge self-presentation with the landscape, transforming the jungle from colonial backdrop to active collaborator. Each figure claims a self-appointed royalty, challenging inherited symbols of dominance through presence, gesture, and improvisation. Las Reinas de la Selva reimagines the jungle queen as a figure of creative survival, fluid identity, and ritual expression. These portraits honor those who carve space for themselves in the tangle of tradition and terrain—where identity is not hidden, but rooted and made visible.
