MEN WITH MACHETES
(2013)
Men with Machetes presents a quiet choreography of strength, labor, and resolve. Photographed shirtless from the waist up and holding a single machete, each man stands in the jungle—direct, grounded, and without theatricality. The machete is more than a tool; it becomes a symbolic extension of survival, resistance, and masculinity. Clothing is absent, hierarchy flattened, leaving only the body, the blade, and the surrounding green. These portraits, made in rural Colombia during an extended residency, honor individual presence while collectively suggesting a force shaped by physical engagement with the land. Men with Machetes reflects on how tools mark the body and embed identity—where strength, symbolism, and class intersect in elemental ways.
