POPPYHEAD

(2019 and 2023)

Installation view of Poppyhead

The opium poppy carries a potent mix of associations—relief, sleep, euphoria, ritual, and commerce. This series explores that complexity through close-up photographs of poppies with a focus on the rounded seed pods marked by incision and time. Grown and photographed in a garden-studio and hand-sliced to release their narcotic sap, they are set against atmospheric skies that evoke stillness and aftermath. The resulting images suggest relics rather than specimens—objects of reverence, potency, and ambiguity. Each photograph is mounted on an oval-shaped metal substrate, mirroring the form of the poppy itself while subtly evoking historical portraiture. This shape reinforces a sense of singularity and symbolic presence, positioning the poppy not just as botanical subject but as a figure of power and reflecting on the plant’s legacy as both sacred and exploited.
